The main objective of this thesis is to gain a better understanding of the relations of spoken and written Romani. Language attitudes and similarities/differences of spoken and written language have extensively been studied before, but mainly for languages with a long history of writing. Thus, research on Romani is of interest for two main reasons : First, it is a language with an oral tradition spoken in areas with a literacybased culture. This scenario allows to study dynamics not widely observed yet because such norms do not exist for Romani. Second, the results may feed back into linguistic theories on spoken and written language given that such theories are largely based on languages that form part of standard language cultures. This thesis consists of 4 empirical studies : 3 are dedicated to explicit and implicit linguistic attitudes and habits of language use while a fourth study offers an analysis of spoken and written texts in Romani. Although Romani writing has been studied before, my thesis adds aspects of metalinguistic knowledge to the discussion. Concerning implicit attitudes, such data do not exist for Romani yet. I assume that attitudes and habits of language use influence writing behaviour and I am interested in the strategies applied in writing Romani and their motivations. My research demonstrates that the relations of spoken and written Romani are shaped by multilingual writers negotiating antagonisms in multiple dimensions.
